About

The name LEVEN has a two-fold meaning. The first, that the dutch word “leven” means “life, to live.” The second, that the English word ‘leaven” can mean “to make something better.” These are two things that I seek to bring about in my work- two things that excite me and feel worth working toward.

I am a ceramic artist currently living near Houston. Working mainly on the potter’s wheel, I make each piece with the hope that it will one day grace the home of another.

Thoughts on Clay

I find inspiration from the belief that those who have gone before inform our present and the personal, empathetic nature of the handmade.

I find empathy is increased by the passing from hand-to-hand of vessels and the acknowledgement of another human’s existence in our daily living.

I am interested in the vessel as an heirloom, and how memories can be stored in fired clay.
